The objectives of the Homelessness Strategy
Updated: 23 May 2012

We have developed a range of targets regarding homelessness so that we can measure how successfully we deal with it.
These include:
- to assess 95% of homelessness applications within 33 days (this target is consistently met)
- to limit the incidence of repeat homelessness to under 10% (currently 9%)
- to introduce the Department of Local Community Government methodology for counting rough sleepers (this was achieved as part of the implementation of the Rough Sleepers’ Strategy)
We have now stopped using private shared accommodation (for example, B&Bs), except in emergencies.
Future actions
The DSD’s Promoting Social Inclusion Working Group report on homelessness was published in 2007. This report contains a range of recommendations particularly aimed at the prevention of homelessness.
In addition, we are currently carrying out a comprehensive review of the 2002 strategy. This will assess the progress against our initial objectives and set out proposals for the continued improvement of services over the next five years. The review will be published in July 2011.
