HMO Grant
What is a House in Multiple Occupation(HMO) Grant?
This is to make improvements to a house which is considered to be an HMO.
Who can apply?
You can apply for a grant if you own a property but it must be let to at least three people who are not all members of the same family. HMO Grants are only available for existing properties within Regeneration Areas such as Grants Urban Renewal Areas, Grant Rural Renewal Areas or Town Centre Living Initiative Areas. Find out more about HMOs here.
What works are covered?
The HMO Grant is available to bring the house up to HMO standards for the number of people living in it and to make it fit for human habitation.
How much grant is available?
The amount of grant we will pay depends on the approved cost of the work up to a maximum of £30,000. We will calculate if you have to make a contribution.
What is the HMO fitness standard?
In addition to the basic fitness standard HMOs must also be fit with regard to the facilities required by the occupants. Therefore there must be adequate:
- facilities for the storage, preparation and cooking of food
- number and location of toilets
- number and location of baths, showers and wash-hand basins
- facilities for the escape from fire
- fire safety precautions
