Homelessness

Introduction

Homelessness does not just describe people sleeping on the streets. It can happen to anyone, for any number of reasons. Even if you have a roof over your head you may still be homeless.

You may be homeless if you are:

  • sleeping on the streets

  • staying with friends or family

  • staying in a hostel

  • staying in a bed and breakfast

  • living in very overcrowded conditions

  • at risk of violence if you stay in your home

  • living in poor conditions that are damaging your health

  • living in a house that is unsuitable for you

What to do next

  • If you think you are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless you should contact us as soon as possible on 03448 920 900. Homelessness is dealt with through our Area Offices, or in the case of Belfast through its dedicated Homelessness Services Unit (HSU). If you need to talk to someone outside office hours there's a useful list of contact numbers here.

  • If you are unsure whether you are homeless or not, see our information on "Are You Homeless?" .

  • We have developed a Homelessness strategy to ensure that the issue is dealt with fully.

  • If you are researching homelessness we have case studies available which illustrate how we have dealt with some specific homelessness issues.
