Energy brokering scheme in development

We are currently developing an innovative new scheme which will broker electricity costs for our tenants at competitive rates.
We want to help our tenants get the best rates for their electricity bills and so we are writing to all the electricity suppliers for details of their current tariffs and asking them, if they are interested, to produce marketing materials specifically for our tenants including any additional features or discounts that they are prepared to offer.
We will then provide information to new tenants when they are signing for their tenancy about the various electricity tariffs available within Northern Ireland and about any offers specifically available to Housing Executive tenants. We currently have around 89,000 properties and every year we re-let about 6,000 properties to new tenants. They are responsible for signing up to their own electricity supply and, although there is a competitive market, many are simply unaware that they have a choice or, are unsure about which tariff best suits their needs.
We will also provide this information to current tenants to ensure that they are aware that they can switch supplier and potentially avail of any additional features or discounts that may be available to them. The decision on which tariff or supplier best suits their needs will however remain with the tenant.
An electricity brokering scheme has the potential to make savings on the fuel costs for many of our tenants helping to alleviate fuel poverty. We hope to launch the scheme in late Autumn.
The Housing Executive is empowered to develop energy brokering arrangements under the Housing Amendment Act (2011).
