Almost 130 Housing Executive tenants living in the Lower Shankill area have been included in a kitchen replacement scheme costing almost £500,000.
The 128 properties, which are a mixture of houses, flats and bungalows built between 1970 and 1989, have been upgraded on a regular basis.  As part of the latest scheme tenants will be able to select their new kitchen units, worktop and tiles from a range of options and kitchen layouts will be improved to accommodate modern day appliances. The look will be completed with a new extractor fan and flooring and we will also install or upgrade smoke and heat detectors as necessary.
Shankill District Manager Gordon Reilly said,“The Housing Executive remains committed to improving housing conditions in the Lower Shankill area and this further investment underpins that commitment.
“Consultation is a key element of any successful scheme and to that end we have worked closely with the community and their representatives in the development of this scheme.  On top of that our contractor, PK Murphy, has appointed a Customer Service Manager to carry out one to one consultation with tenants before work begins in their home.
“I’m confident that this partnership will pay dividends and ensure that the scheme progresses with minimum disruption for tenants.”
The scheme was also welcomed by Ernie McKinney from the Lower Shankill Community Association. He said, “Over the years we have worked closely with the Housing Executive on a number of initiatives in the area, so we are delighted with this latest news.  Not only will the new kitchens go a long way in helping to modernise these homes but they will make a real difference to the everyday lives of the residents involved.”
Margaret McKeag was one of the first residents to get a new kitchen and she said, “I’m over the moon with my new kitchen and would like to say a big thank you to the Housing Executive and the workmen who did a great job.”
The scheme will involve 128  Housing Executive homes at the following locations:
  • California Close
  • Denmark Street
  • Hopewell Avenue
  • Malvern Way
  • Shankill Parade and Terrace
  • Sherbrook Terrace
  • Upper Townsend Terrace
