Seventy Housing Executive tenants living in Berlin Street, Brussels Street and Paris Street in the Shankill area of Belfast are getting brand new kitchens in a scheme worth over £275,000.
We built these homes, which are a mixture of bungalows, flats and houses, between 1985 and 1989 and they have been upgraded on a regular basis. As part of the current scheme the original kitchens will be replaced and tenants will be able to select their units, worktop and tiles from a range of options – a new cooker hood and floor covering will complete the look. Electrical and plumbing installations will also be upgraded to cater for modern day appliances and smoke and heat detectors installed or upgraded as necessary.
For many people the kitchen is the heart of the home but we realise there comes a time when they need to be replaced. Tenants have been involved in every aspect of the scheme; from planning the layout and design of their new kitchen to selecting their units and worktop. We find that this type of collaborative work not only brings great results but ensures that tenants get the kitchen they really want.
PK Murphy is carrying out the work on our behalf and their Customer Services Manager, Eunan McCourt, remarked, “We are fully committed to customer involvement and believe we have backed this up with a high quality product and service. If this scheme progresses like previous ones in the Shankill then we know the tenants involved will have a kitchen they can be really proud of.”
Allison Courtney was one of the first tenants to get a new kitchen and she told Shankill District Manager Gordon Reilly, “It’s lovely to get a nice, new modern kitchen. The extra sockets and cooker hood are great and the fact that I was able to choose my own cupboards and work top means that the new kitchen reflects my own personal taste right down to my new accessories!”
“The workmen were great and I would like to say a big thank you to them and my Housing Officer Ellen Megarry for all their help.”
