Residents of all ages and abilities in the Ballykeel area are now enjoying a new community facility in the estate, welcoming the positive new feeling the shared space has generated.

The idea of a community garden was originally discussed early in 2018, when local residents met with staff to discuss options for a more attractive and inclusive use of the area.

Following meetings and discussions, the garden got underway earlier this year, and was open to residents at the end of July.

As well as seating areas and a pathway through the garden, there are also raised beds for allotments and plans to create an orchard in the future.

Local resident, Adam Anderson, officially opened the community garden this week.  His mum, Donna, said:

“I’ve had the privilege to work closely with the new Ballykeel 2 Steering Group, and am amazed at the garden project and how well it has turned out.

“It is already used regularly by residents living in the estate and is a credit to everyone involved, including those who highlighted their wishes to improve the area.

“To have them ask my son to open the community garden is humbling and indeed an honour, thank you. I wish the group all the very best for their future endeavours.”

A representative from the residents involved in the project said:

“We are immensely pleased with the community garden, and intend to continue improving our estate.

“We wish to express our gratitude to the Housing Executive for getting the garden work completed in a relatively short space of time and for investing in our estate.  It is a testament to their input that we have such a lovely space to enjoy, and look forward to using the raised flowerbeds and the orchard trees being planted.

“Former Councillor Donna Anderson has been instrumental in the talks and seeing this project through to its completion. Her help has been invaluable, and we are delighted to have her son, Adam, officially open the community garden.”

Local Housing Executive Manager, Roy McClean, also attended the official launch.  He said:

“It’s been very rewarding working with the residents in Ballykeel to create a community space that we know is very much wanted and will be enjoyed.

“We look forward to helping you create more exciting projects for your community further down the line.”
