Boiler Replacement Scheme

The Boiler Replacement Scheme is to help home owners with the cost of replacing boilers which are at least 15 years old.

To qualify you must:

  • Live in Northern Ireland;
  • Own and occupy your property as your main residence;
  • Have a total household gross income which is less than £40,000 per year; and
  • Have a boiler which is at least 15 years old

If you meet the above criteria the boiler can be changed from a gas, LPG or oil fired boiler to a high efficiency gas, oil or wood pellet fired boiler.

The Boiler Replacement Scheme does not apply to Economy 7 heating, stoves used exclusively for cooking, back boilers or room heaters.

The scheme is not available for tenants living in either the social (Housing Executive or housing association) or private rented sector.

Please note: you MUST NOT start any work until you receive confirmation in writing that you qualify for the Boiler Replacement Scheme.  The Housing Executive will not pay for any boiler replacement work started / completed in your house before you have received this written permission.

How much grant-aid is available?

The amount of grant-aid payable will depend on your household’s total annual gross income (income from all owner occupiers and their partners will be taken into account) and whether you plan to install controls..

Household annual gross income: Less than £20,000

  • New boiler, same fuel type as existing, no controls: £700
  • New boiler with full controls: £1,000

Household annual gross income: £20,001 - £39,999

  • New boiler, same fuel type as existing, no controls: £400

  • New boiler with full controls: £500

Please note: Before starting work please ensure you have made an application for Building Control to your local Council.  There is a fee for this application which is not included in / covered by your grant payment.

How we work out your household’s annual gross income?

The total income will include all earnings from employment (including self-employment), and any income you receive from benefits, pensions or any other source(s).  Income from the home owner and their partner, if applicable, will be taken into account for our income calculation.

The type of boiler you can install

We stipulate that a new high efficiency ‘A’ rated condensing type boiler in accordance with the Domestic Building Services Compliance Guide is installed.

The work must be carried out by a qualified and competent installer who has suitable experience and expertise.  Where a gas boiler is installed you must use a registered Gas Safe Engineer.
