Boiler Replacement Scheme

The Boiler Replacement Scheme is to help home owners with the cost of replacing boilers. The boiler must be at least 15 years old.

You may qualify if you:

  • live in Northern Ireland
  • own and occupy your property as your main home
  • have a household gross income less than £40,000 per year
  • have a boiler which is at least 15 years old

The property must not be a

  • holiday home
  • bed & breakfast
  • commercial establishment

 If you meet the above criteria and your current boiler is:

  • gas boiler
  • LPG boiler
  • oil fired boiler

You can replace this with a new high efficiency:

  • gas boiler
  • oil boiler
  • wood pellet fired boiler

The Boiler Replacement Scheme does not apply to:

  • Economy 7 heating
  • stoves used for cooking
  • back boilers or room heaters

The scheme is not available for tenants living in:

  • social housing (Housing Executive or housing association tenants)
  • the private rented sector

You must not start work until you receive confirmation, in writing, that you qualify for grant-aid.

We will not pay for any work started or finished in your home before you receive our permission.

The amount of grant-aid we pay will depend on your financial circumstances. This will include gross annual income of owner occupiers and their partners.

We will also consider whether you plan to install heating controls.

Household annual gross income

Less than £20,000

  • New boiler, same fuel type as existing, no controls: £700
  • New boiler with full controls: £1,000

£20,001 - £39,999

  • New boiler, same fuel type as existing, no controls: £400
  • New boiler with full controls: £500

Before you start work you must apply for Building Control approval. This is provided by your local council and you must pay a fee for this.

The cost for this fee is not included in your grant-aid payment.

Your income includes:

  • all earnings from employment (including self-employment)
  • certain benefits
  • pensions
  • any other source(s)

We will include your income and your partner’s income and any other owner occupier(s).

Your new boiler must be a condensing type with seasonal efficiency in accordance with the Domestic Building Services Compliance Guide with an ErP efficiency rating of 92% or greater and must be installed by a competent installer.

You must get a qualified and competent installer to complete the work. You should choose someone who has suitable experience and expertise.
