Futures Project

What is the Futures Project?

‘Futures’ is a six-month programme for young people encouraging personal and social development, good relations and citizenship.

Participants will achieve an OCN Level 2 Award in Personal Success and Wellbeing (6 credits) and will partake in at least 2 weeks of community volunteering experience. 

A mentor (via Start360) will also be provided to support participants with any personal issues or to guide them in entering into education or employment.

Some of the topics that may be covered include:

  • Leadership skills
  • Team work
  • Confidence and self esteem
  • Health and wellbeing i.e. drugs and alcohol, mental health, relationships and sexual health
  • Cultural diversity
  • Prejudice and discrimination
  • Sectarianism, racism, homophobia, disability awareness etc. 
  • How I can make a difference in my community
  • Employability

‘Futures’ is aimed towards young people aged 16-24 who are available during the day to take part throughout a period of 3-6 months.

This project is perfect for young people who:

  • Are unemployed and looking for something to do that will help their future prospects 
  • Have dropped out of their course/school (or are planning to) or are being excluded for any reason
  • Are maybe lacking direction and not sure what they want to do as a career
  • Have personal issues acting as a barrier to them in education i.e. mental health, medical conditions, family issues
  • Want to come to Belfast Met (or another FE college) but aren’t sure how to get there or feel they aren’t capable (this is a great taster and potentially preparation for college life)
     
  • OCN Level 2 Award in Personal Success and Wellbeing (6 credits)
  • New skills in leadership, teamwork, communication and independent living
  • Volunteering experience
  • Support with promoting their own health and wellbeing
  • Improved confidence, self-esteem and resilience
  • Employability workshops
  • Transition/Progression support for their next steps
  • One to one mentoring with a Start360 keyworker
  • Informal learning environment facilitated by youth workers

  • £8 per day incentive payment (doesn’t affect any benefits)
