National Statistics status means that official statistics meet the highest standards of trustworthiness, quality and public value, and comply with all aspects of the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.

During 2016, the Office for Statistics Regulation undertook an assessment which considered whether the Northern ireland House Condition Survey (NIHCS) preliminary and main reports met the required standard in order to be designated as a National Statistic (NS).
The Office for Statistics Regulation judged that NS designation should be awarded to the NIHCS reports once the Northern Ireland Housing Executive demonstrated that it had met the requirements set out in the assessment report.
The assessment report was published on the UK Statistics Authority website in December 2016:
In response to the report, we produced an action plan outlining how it intended to meet the requirements. The action plan is available below.

Updates to the action plan will also be published as requirements are met. We are expected to report back to the Office for Statistics Regulation by 31 March 2017 whereupon the Authority will decide whether to confer NS designation based on the advice of the Office for Statistics Regulation.
The Housing Executive met the requirements set out in the assessment report and the NIHCS was awarded National Statistics staus. The NIHCS 2016: revised preliminary report was published in October 2017
