Regeneration involves both private and social housing and commercial properties.
Derelict homes in the Village area of Belfast
From the 1st of April 2007, operational responsibility for the management of the Social Housing Development Programme transferred from the Department for Social Development (now the Department for Communities) to the Housing Executive. This means that we are responsible for housing regeneration in Northern Ireland.
We support the Departments' strategy "People and Place". That strategy crosses the boundaries of social housing, private housing and the commercial sector. We are working to bring housing in town centres and on main routes back into use.
We talk to local communities, public representatives, statutory bodies and other interested parties, before producing a sectoral strategy. This aims to provide a framework for both directing investment and intervention, and managing change to avoid merely shifting problems from one area to another.
