A Giant leap for the Glen

Young people from the Glen Ward area of Newtownards are celebrating a successful icecapade after completing a leadership programme with the Belfast Giants.
Through the support of the our Shared Communities Programme some 14 young people aged 15 years and over were able to participate in the 6-week Giant Ambition and Leadership Programme. The 6-weeks culminated in the group kitting up and taking to the ice at the Odyssey arena for the full ice hockey experience.
Overall the course proved a fun and interesting way to look at leadership styles and helpful for those taking part to identify their own leadership potential and style. As a group they explored how to manage conflict by suggesting examples and then through drawing and writing created solutions to each situation. The participants agreed it was an enjoyable way to “learn about difference” and getting “on the ice with the Giants” one of the “best experiences”.
John Gibson from Glen Ward Community Development Association commented: “We’re delighted with the response to this initiative. We believe creating positive opportunities for our young people will help bolster our community’s development and ensure the Glen Ward’s future.
“After the heartening feedback we are hoping to develop more chances for our young people to engage with each other and older members of our area.”
All of those who took part said they thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would ‘participate in further activities run by and in the community’ which bodes well for the community’s future.
