Housing Minister Nelson McCausland has visited the site of a new £1.7m social housing scheme at Nelson Drive in Londonderry.
The new homes which are being built by Trinity Housing, will provide four apartments for active older people and 13 family homes all for applicants on the social housing waiting list. The development will be part funded by the Northern Ireland Executive through the Department for Social Development. Completion is planned for March 2015.
Speaking on site, Minister McCausland said: “The supply of increasing numbers of new social housing is one of my key objectives as Minister for Social Development. The Housing Executive has estimated that going forward 2,000 new social homes are required every year to keep abreast of demand.
“I am pleased to say that plans are already in place to deliver at that level of output in each of the next three years. These 17 new homes will make a valuable contribution to the 2,000 planned for cities, towns and villages throughout Northern Ireland during 2014-2015.”
Focusing on the plans for Nelson Drive, the Minister said: “This is an excellent location in an already well established area which is close to parkland and other local amenities. I congratulate Trinity Housing for putting together such an inclusive housing mix and the Housing Executive for making best use of its surplus site.
“Once completed this scheme at Nelson Drive will provide a boost to social housing supply in Londonderry. This is co-operative working at its very best and I look forward to seeing the finished scheme in due course.”
The new homes will be built to high energy efficiency levels. All have also been designed to Secured by Design and Lifetime Homes standards, ensuring added security for tenants and flexibility of adaptation if required at a later date.
Robert Moore, Chairman of Trinity Housing said: “Trinity Housing is dedicated to delivering quality life time homes for those in housing need. We are pleased to be developing a new housing scheme consisting of 17 units of social housing in the Waterside area. We look forward to the scheme being completed in March 2015.”
