High level investment in New Lodge

Residents living in Cuchulainn House in the New Lodge area of North Belfast are set to benefit from a Housing Executive improvement scheme costing over one million pounds.
The scheme, which is just getting underway, involves the provision of new double glazed windows in individual flats. Other improvements include concrete repairs and the provision of additional insulation and new lightweight cladding to the external façade of the block. A new pitched roof and rainwater disposal system will also be installed as part of the scheme.
Our North Belfast Area Manager Malachy McKinney said, “Cuchulainn House was erected in the mid 1960s and while it has been upgraded on a regular basis over the years, we recognised that further work was now required so that it continues to meet the high standards we all expect.
“We are confident that the improvements now being undertaken will not only improve the external appearance of the block but will also protect it against the elements for a further 30 years. The new windows and insulation should also ensure that individual tenants benefit through reduced heating costs.
“Extensive consultation has been carried out in the run up to work starting and we will continue to liaise with residents and their representatives to ensure that work progresses with the minimum possible disruption.”
Following the completion of the pilot scheme at Cuchulainn House a full evaluation will be carried out. If successful it is the Housing Executive’s intention to roll out similar improvements, where practical, to the other 13 multi-storey blocks it owns in Belfast over the coming years.
We have worked closely with the New Lodge Housing Forum, which incorporates the Seven Towers, in the development of the scheme and speaking on their behalf Liam Wiggins added, “This is not only excellent news for the individual residents living in Cuchulainn House but for the New Lodge area as a whole. The scheme has been a long time in the pipeline and I am very glad to see work get underway and I for one can’t wait to see the finished article.
“The fact that the other six blocks might be in line for similar improvements over the coming years is welcome news indeed.”
Piperhill Construction has been awarded the contract for Cuchulainn House, which has a value of £1,047,000 and work is expected to take just under one year to complete.
