£1.3 million funding from the carrier bag levy will be available for environmental projects
The Challenge Fund
The Environment Minister Mark H Durkan has announced £1.3 million funding from the carrier bag levy for the NGO Challenge Fund 2015.
This will enable groups from the community and voluntary sector deliver a range of environmental projects. The Fund 2015 includes a new 3 year programme which will provide funding support of a more strategic nature which contribute to the conservation and promotion of the natural and built heritage of NI.
The carrier bag levy is considered very much a people’s fund. In 2013 the Minister ensured that the money from the levy fund went back into the community through environmental projects. Each project must fit with one theme from Access & Recreation; Community Action; Education & Awareness; Environmental Management; Historic Environment; Marine & Freshwater; Schools, Colleges & Universities.
Northern Ireland Environment Link (NIEL) which is an NIHE business partner, is administering the NGO Challenge Fund on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA).
Time is running out! Applications from eligible groups are invited to the NGO Challenge Fund and must be submitted to by noon on Friday 3rd October 2014. Successful projects will be announced in late October/early November 2014.
