Lowering the cost of oil
Published: Thur, 27 Aug 2015
Members of Magheralin Oil Buying Club saved 15%, over £26, on a fill of 500 litres when they grouped their oil needs together.
Over 45 households are members of the club which is funded by the Housing Executive and managed by Bryson Energy. It is free to join and open to everyone living in Magheralin and neighbouring areas of Dollingstown and Moira - Housing Executive tenants, owner-occupiers, housing association tenants and those who privately rent.
Welcoming the first fill for the group in Magheralin, Social Development Minister, Mervyn Storey MLA, said:
“Oil buying clubs offer people the opportunity to join with others in buying their home heating oil in bulk, achieving a better price than smaller, more costly refills. This is particularly useful in rural areas where there is a heavy dependence on oil.
“I commend the Housing Executive and Bryson Energy for undertaking this initiative and congratulate Magheralin Community Association for championing the oil club in their area.”
Harry Briggs, Chair of the Magheralin Oil Buying Club, is delighted with the outcome for members after the first-fill. He commented:
“It was great that members who ordered 500 litres of oil saved over £26 with their fill. The oil club is a simple premise; the more of us who buy oil together the more we reduce the cost.
“Even better households have the flexibility to buy as little as 200 litres of oil. When we put all of the orders together we can obtain a better price and the saving made is passed on equally to all.”
Our Energy Conservation Manager, Noel Rice, is pleased with the progress oil buying clubs are making. He explained:
“The Housing Executive believes an oil buying club is an excellent way to help a household reduce the cost of oil. They are able to budget for more regular smaller deliveries, ease price fluctuations and save money. I look forward to hearing of Magheralin Oil Buying Club’s continued success.”
Meanwhile Raymond Gormley of Bryson Energy, which is supporting Magheralin Oil Buying Club as it establishes, said:
“For almost 70% of homes in Northern Ireland oil is the main fuel and its price remains changeable. We are delighted with the response to date from those living in Magheralin and with the results of their first fill.”
