Extern provides support to those who are homeless
Extern logo
Extern’s Multi-Disciplinary Homeless Support Team is a dedicated social work outreach team.
This team provides specialist assessment and intensive support to those who are homeless, at risk of becoming homeless and who have additional needs relating to mental and physical health, substance use, learning disability, offending, families and asylum. This work is funded by the Housing Executive, in conjunction with the Belfast Trust.
Extern meets people at their point of need. In addition to providing specialist assessment in the Housing Executive we work across the sector with other organisations including 16 different hostels.  Demand for services has increased by over 50% in the last two years.
In 2014-2015, our Multi-Disciplinary Homeless Support Team worked with 1,144 individuals. Of these, 23.6% were given support to maintain their accommodation and prevent homelessness. In addition to addressing individual housing needs, our team supported 568 people with mental health issues, 228 people with substance use issues, 135 with asylum support and 95 people with physical health issues.
The Housing Executive’s support is critical in enabling us to continue making a positive impact on the lives of our service users.
