(L to R) Owen McDonnell, Comghal McQuillan, Paula McGuigan and James Treanor unveil plans for a £1.2million investment in the Ardcarne Park area of Newry.
A new £1.2million investment by us is being launched today (Monday 12th December) in Newry to enhance the area of Carnagat.
Over a four week period, work will commence at Ardcarne Park in what will be the largest single investment by us in the local Newry area in the last ten years.
Over the past 5 years, we have invested £1.1million in the Carnagat area in relation to planned schemes. This has included the installation of double glazing and external maintenance in properties located in the area.
The work in Ardcarne Park will include enhanced pedestrian access, the replacement of street lighting, altering road layouts and construction of new roads to help facilitate increased parking in the area. The provision of galvanised railings and timber fences to gardens, as well as the retrofitting of windows to selected end-of terrace and gable walls will help improve the homes in the area.
A lengthy consultation process was conducted by locally based staff members to acknowledge issues of concern for the community of Ardcarne Park. Following the findings, it was clear that replacements to the current fixtures in the area were greatly needed.
It is anticipated that the redevelopment of the area will help tackle the issue of anti-social behaviour with better lighting fixtures, improved accessibility and strengthen community relations.
Owen McDonnell, our Area Manager said:
“This investment signals a clear intent of the long-term commitment to the Carnagat area in helping to foster vibrant communities and make a difference to homes and neighbourhoods.
“The Housing Executive is pleased to announce this significant investment into the Carnagat area of Newry.  We engaged with the local community to find out concerns in the area and how they can be addressed. This proactive approach has been whole-heartedly welcomed by residents whose input was important to this initiative.
“This investment will help build strong communities through partnership working. We would like to thank everyone, especially the Carnagat Community Association for their involvement in making this project come to fruition.”
Paula McGuigan from the Carnagat Community Association added:
“It is extremely encouraging to see such a substantial investment into the local community. Residents in the area had raised issues around the maintenance of the area which will be addressed by the Housing Executive by the replacing of existing fixtures.
“The area of Carnagat has a strong community spirit and we hope this redevelopment of the area will make residents feel proud to live in Ardcarne Park.
“I would like to thank the Housing Executive for their ongoing support across the Carnagat area.”
