A new craft class and befriending scheme for people in the Coolessan area is proving popular with local residents.
The ‘Creative Craft Buddy’ support programme, which is funded by the Housing Executive, is run by the Coolessan Community Association.
Once a week people of all ages come together to make crafts at the local community house.
Sheila McWilliams from the community group said:
“The aim of this project is to provide a befriending and intergenerational scheme within a craft class setting. Participants can learn new skills such as sewing, arts, woodwork and horticulture.
“Already the classes are proving popular and we hope that through the initiative we will reduce isolation among elderly and vulnerable people, and help them to lead independent lives.
“We also aim to increase the skills and confidence of local people by bringing in experts on healthy eating, home safety and security.”
Our local Area Manager, Mark Alexander, said:
“We are delighted to fund community initiatives that bring people together to develop new skills.
“Sharing knowledge in a practical way is a good way to strengthen community relations and build vibrant communities.”
