Following a £275,000 improvement scheme, twenty four Housing Executive tenants are excited to be returning to their homes in the Clarawood area of East Belfast.
We've upgraded the one bedroom bungalows, built between 1955 and 1960, on a regular basis. However, this latest scheme has perhaps brought about the greatest benefits for residents.  For as well as getting new windows and external doors, the bathroom and electrics have been upgraded and the bungalows have been extended to facilitate a new, larger kitchen.
The modernisation of these bungalows was a priority for the District Office and, like all projects, work started long before the first workman arrived on site.
In Clarawood we spent a great deal of time consulting with the community and their representatives during the development of the scheme. So not only do the bungalows now meet 21st century standards but the tenants involved had a real input towards the nature of the improvements.
It’s this initial work, along with the ongoing support throughout the project, that helped make it a great success on all fronts. And the icing on the cake was seeing the residents so happy to be moving back into their homes. Violet McLelland, a returning tenant, had this to say: “To be honest I was a little concerned about being away from my home while the work was going on but, I’ll tell you something, I’m thrilled with the place.  For me having the extension makes the place seem so much bigger and you wouldn’t believe how warm it is since the new windows were put in. It’s been well worth the wait - good job everyone.”
