Talented pupils won cash prizes for their school and a free trip to W5, Belfast for their class as part of our ‘Design an Eco-Home’ art competition for primary seven pupils.

The competition required P7 children from across Northern Ireland to design a home that is energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

The judging panel, made up of our staff, sifted over nearly 800 entries before awarding Matthew from Annahilt Primary School 1st prize.

Matthew’s teacher, Ms McCune, explains how he got involved in the competition:

“Sustaining energy is a topic that comes up a lot in the curriculum so when I received the competition pack from the Housing Executive I thought it was a great opportunity for my class to show what they had learned in a creative way.

“I am delighted that Matthew’s entry was chosen as the winning design. He is a true ‘eco warrior’ and always gives his best. He is passionate about environmental issues and winning this competition has inspired him to continue his eco work when he goes to his post primary school in September.”

Just missing out on the top spot was St Patrick’s Primary School, Pennyburn pupil Emily who took 2nd place and Leadhill Primary School pupil Anna who came 3rd.  All three winners went to W5, Belfast with their classes earlier this week.

Robert Clements, our Sustainable Development Manager, said:

"As the Home Energy Conservation Authority for Northern Ireland, we want to encourage young people to take steps to make their home more energy efficient and help their parents or guardians save money on their energy bills.

“The panel were really impressed with how Matthew considered clean energy sources to power the home, ways to help wildlife and reducing household waste. It was clear that he put in a lot of thought and effort into designing his eco-home, he definitely is a very worthy winner!”
