Portaferry Community Collective Ltd has won a £1,000 prize in the Housing Executive’s Rural Community Awards.

The group attended a Housing Executive event in Loughguile last week where they were presented with their award by the Housing Executive’s Director of Regional Services, Siobhan McCauley.

They were chosen as the winner of the Sustainable Village of the Year in the large village category.

The Housing Executive was impressed by how the community group regenerated the village and brought residents together to improve the rural area.

Declan Watson from Portaferry Community Collective Ltd, said:

“It’s very pleasing to be recognised and to win this award. A lot of local people put a lot of work and effort into bringing Portaferry to life and to improve the place and it’s great to be recognised by the Housing Executive.

Sinead Collins, the Housing Executive’s Rural and Regeneration Manager, added:

“Our rural community groups are constantly fundraising, organising events and working hard to make life better for people in their communities.

“This is usually done on a voluntary basis and so we want to celebrate this.

“Our Rural Community Awards are our way of showing that we appreciate the incredible work that they do.”
