A Housing Executive Community Involvement Grant of £2058 was awarded to Millburn Community Development group in Coleraine to deliver a creative, digital learning programme for young people aged 9–16 years.

Particular emphasis was placed upon reaching those families living in Housing Executive homes.

The project used four iPads and accessories to support young people to develop skills in digital art, music production, storytelling, coding, and graphic design, while also promoting wellbeing, inclusion, and self-expression.

As part of the programme the young people were supported by Bytes, a Northern Ireland youth work charity and Supporting Communities to deliver workshops to older people in relation to online safety.

The initiative helped build confidence, digital literacy, and positive mental health in a fun and engaging environment for all.

Amay Ellis, Millburn Community Development Group committee member said, “We are incredibly proud of our Millburn Digital Champions and the way they have led this intergenerational programme.

“Seeing young people share their digital skills, build confidence and connect with older members of our community has been so special.

“This is what community is all about, learning together and supporting one another.”

Carla Mulholland, Digital Inclusion Officer, Supporting Communities said, “They were a lovely, engaging group in Coleraine who worked hard on every task, and their enthusiasm for supporting older people really shone through.

“They developed a presentation and an animation using Roblox to help their older relatives and friends navigate online safety in a simple, fun, and relatable way.”

Gareth Doran, Housing Executive Good Relations Officer, Causeway said, “It is very rewarding to support projects where older generations are learning from younger generations and vice versa.

“It was evident that the young people really enjoyed helping older members navigate their way around the digital world while having a lot of fun along the way.”
