Avid fisherwomen in the North West have generated waves of wellbeing in their community using angling as bait.

Know Thy Neighbour, Do Your Community a Favour is an Oaks Fishery health and well-being project in Derry/Londonderry which was awarded £4, 082 through a Housing Executive community grant.

Programme participants and facilitators were joined by the Mayor of Derry and Strabane District Council Patricia Logue to celebrate the programme’s completion in The Health Hub, Hyde Park, Pennyburn, Derry.

Ian Gamble, The Oaks Manager said,

“Thank you to the Housing Executive for funding our good relations programme.

“Our project aims to create more cohesive local communities like years ago by providing safe, accessible angling facilities and group activities for everyone.

“Know Thy Neighbour, Do Your Community a Favour gives participants personal development skills which they can take back into the community and use to encourage others to be more cohesive, integrated, safer and together.

“We worked with a group of 11 woman from different backgrounds who came together to participate in activities such as Resilio’s Hope Ambassador programme which aimed to give adults the tools to build and maintain hope and resilience in themselves, their families, and communities.

“In the course of the project this group of community champions also explored the history and culture of their city as well as taking part angling and teambuilding activities.”

Andrew Mullan, Housing Executive Good Relations Officer, West Area said, “The positive impact of this project is obvious.

“It has encouraged this community to become more like it was years ago when everyone looked out for each other, knew their neighbours, and spent more time together as a community.

 “By supporting this projec.
