Sixteen clubs from across Belfast came together for a cross-community football tournament that united players through a shared love of sport.

Organised by 22nd Old Boys from Ballysillan and Shamrock FC in Ardoyne, the Belfast Super League was given a funding boost with £5425 from the Housing Executive

After weeks of fierce competition, the tournament ended in a tense final with Crumlin Star lifting the trophy for the 1st team tournament, and 22nd Old Boys winning the 2nd team tournament.

Brian Kirker, from 22nd Old Boys, said: “Our tournament was key in attracting a demographic of young men who aren’t normally included in cross community activities in interface areas.

“We welcomed 250 players to take part in the project, which promoted inclusion and respect whilst celebrating local footballing talent.

“A huge thanks to the Housing Executive for their funding support in making this happen.”

Connor Stiobhard, from Community Football Company said: “Our aim was to foster unity and positive engagement during a traditionally divisive period.

“Over the course of the tournament it was great to see friendships being formed through football.

“Well done to worthy winners Crumlin Star, 22nd Old Boys, and thanks to all the teams for taking part in the competition this year.”

Dr Seán Brennan, Good Relations Officer at the Housing Executive, said: “We’re proud to support this tournament, which promotes respect and good relations in our community.

“Shamrock FC and 22nd Old Boys have created a tournament that welcomes all players to enjoy football in an inclusive space.”
