An Equipment grant of £1,314.65 has been awarded to Hillside Men’s Shed by the Housing Executive – this will support the continued development of its inclusive community space based at Newry Street Unite Community Centre in Kilkeel.

Serving as a cross-community initiative, Hillside Men’s Shed offers a space where men can come together to connect, converse, and create.  Modelled on the concept of a traditional garden shed—but on a larger scale—it provides a welcoming space where men can pursue practical interests, learn new skills, and enjoy making and mending activities.

Claire Crainey, Housing Executive Area Manager said, “We are very glad to be supporting Hillside Men’s Shed with this Equipment Grant.

“Hillside Men’s Shed has done some amazing work over the years in working towards connection between local men and it is our hope this new equipment will allow them to continue and develop their work!”

Playing a vital role in reducing social isolation and loneliness, the Men’s Shed addresses issues increasingly prevalent in the local area.

Jennifer Clements, group co-ordinator for Hillside Men’s Shed added, “Our aim is to promote better health and wellbeing amongst men and to provide a safe and supportive place where they can meet, talk, and connect.”

Funding such as this will enable the purchase of a mobile hand basin; a plumbing-free solution for essential handwashing and cleaning within the shed. It will also provide funding for a CNC machine, which will allow the Shed to expand its services and workshops, while meeting the growing demand for skill and development in woodworking and digital technology.

Addition of this new equipment is expected to help Hillside Men’s Shed broaden its activities and increase engagement among local men, ultimately making a significant impact on the reduction of loneliness and social isolation in the community.
