Newry residents beat winter blues with walk and talk

Members of St Mary’s Youth & Community Association in Newry have been building local connections and getting active thanks to a funding boost from the Housing Executive.

The group received a £1110 Community Cohesion grant to plan a 9 mile walk along the Greenway route from Carlingford towards Newry. Afterwards, the group enjoyed lunch together and finished with a guided meditation workshop.

Kate Cahill, Chairperson at St Mary’s Youth & Community Association, said: “The day was a great opportunity for local people of all ages to come together, connect with each other, and combat the winter blues.

“The craic started on the bus, with plenty of talking along the walk and fantastic views of Carlingford Lough and the mountains in the background. We finished with lunch and relaxed with a meditation session, the perfect end to the day. Thanks to the Housing Executive for facilitating this event and we’re looking forward to getting out more together.”

Gerard Smith, Good Relations Officer at the Housing Executive, said: “We’re pleased to support St Mary’s Youth & Community Association to build real community connections, combat isolation and boost physical and mental health. This event was a great opportunity for tenants to strengthen relationships, meet new neighbours and get active in the winter months.”
