Funky kids in Rathcoole are reaping the rewards of Housing Executive funding as their new allotment begins bearing fruit.

Seeds have been sewn and produce is growing at the new garden at Glenbane Avenue, Rathcoole thanks to a Housing Executive community involvement grant of £2794.

Tending to the roots of this blossoming project are Funky Kids, a community group which works with children with additional needs and ASD.

The avid young environmentalists have transformed a former disused, unsightly space into a blossoming educational garden for everyone.

Lynn Nicholson, Chairperson, Funky Kids said;

“We are very appreciative of the Housing Executive’s support for this intergenerational project which teaches young people about biodiversity, the natural world and how to grow food.

“It also brings the community together in a safe and welcoming space where they feel they truly belong.

“The purpose of this project is to address social need. During this cost of living crisis we hope it will provide sustainable food to families.

"We are also confident it will provide education and training to young people and create a sense of community and improve the appearance of the area.”

Lesley Cuthbert, Housing Executive Team Leader Newtownabbey said;

"I am so happy to see this amazing and very worthy project get off the ground – literally!

 "The children are sure to reap so many benefits as it allows them to connect with nature as well as teaching them responsibility and patience.

"Hopefully it will inspire them to eat their greens too.

“Gardening brings people together and really enhances community spirit especially when those involved see the results of all their hard work.”

Jonathan Strain, Housing Executive Neighbourhood Officer Newtownabbey said;

“It is great to see several of the local school children involved and locals from the community taking pride in their estate.

"It is heartening to see those involved so eager to get at it and I have to say they have done a fabulous job to get it up to its current standard.

“They have great plans for what they want to do with it. Next year should be blooming marvellous.”
