A day of fun supported by the Housing Executive has brought a much longed for temporary skatepark to young peoples’ doorstep in Strabane.

Families living in the Head of the Town and the wider district flocked to the urban sports event which received £5,000 from the Housing Executive’s Community Cohesion Fund.

Fostering and encouraging community relationships between local residents and the BAME groups across Strabane was the aim of this partnership project facilitated by Fountain Street Community Association, Strabane Urban Sports and Strabane Ethnic Community Association.

Fountain Street Community Development Association Centre Manager Mary Deery said,

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Housing Executive for kindly funding this event.

“We are absolutely delighted and overwhelmed by the success of this funday and of the positive impact it has had on the wider Strabane community.

“The vibe was incredible, lots of inclusion for the less experienced and lots of fun for every ability.”

Liam Cannon, Strabane Urban Sports said,

“We have been driving the campaign to have a skate park installed in Strabane for a long time. We aspire to give our community access to a free urban sports park and the crowds who attended this event show that this is something that the area would support very strongly.”

Andrew Mullan, Good Relations Officer, West said,

“This event attracted people from outside the Head of the Town area and so raised the profile of the area in a positive way.

“It is a great to support an event which helps raise awareness of the needs of the younger generation and their quest to have a permanent urban skate park installed in Strabane.

“Well done to all involved in such a worthwhile project.”
