Choosing community cohesion in Ballyduff

Valuable life lessons designed to help young people make better life choices is the focus of a Housing Executive funded education programme in South Antrim.
With help from Nexus, HYPE and the Youth Justice Agency the PSNI are delivering a Neighbourhood Policing Team engagement programme alongside Ballyduff Redevelopment Group in the Ballyduff Community Centre, as part of a mini programme to engage with young people from the area.
Under the communities in transition criteria the project was awarded £1848 via a community cohesion fund.
Twenty young people from Year 9 – 13 attended the programme which aimed to educate on issues including, violence against women and healthy relationships, domestic abuse, internet safety, anti-social behaviour, drugs and the dangers of vaping.
Stephen Gamble, Good Relations Officer, South Antrim said: “This diverse programme was an effective way of engaging our local young people.
“Spending the day with their local NPT officers was an invaluable learning experience for them while taking part in tailored workshops like drugs awareness and internet safety opened their eyes to issues that are relevant to their everyday lives.
“Fun activities like Pizza with a Peeler, go-karting and scrapyard golf were great ways for our local officers to break down barriers and build relationships with the young people.

“We are extremely thankful for their continued support and look forward to building & developing relationships further with our young people in Ballyduff.
“Ballyduff Redevelopment group are doing an incredible job in transforming the area and are eager and supportive to work with the PSNI and the Housing Executive to provide a safer society for all in the area.”
Colin McMahon, Ballyduff Community Centre Manager said, “We appreciate the continued support from the Housing Executive.
“Not only are our youth having a great time, but they are also learning some invaluable information along the way.
“Mutual trust and respect that seemed near impossible five years ago is now building continuously.”
