Energy Efficiency in Social Housing

The Energy Efficiency in Social Housing project is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Investment for Growth and Jobs Programme for Northern Ireland 2014-2020.

The approved eligible programme cost is over €50 million, of which €33 million will be provided by the ERDF with the remaining being invested by the Housing Executive.

The programme covers a six year period until 2023/24 and will improve the energy performance of approximately 1400 homes managed by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

Programme Update 

Aluminium Bungalows

To date, External Wall Insulation works schemes have been completed to aluminium bungalows in the following areas:

  • South Antrim (Randalstown, Crumlin, Ballyclare & Newtownabbey)
  • Mallon Villas, Magherafelt
  • Camowen Cottages & Watson Park, Omagh
  • Bloomfield Place, Bangor
  • Carrick Drive, Lurgan
  • Causeway, Dunloy, Rasharkin & Ballymoney

A further scheme in the Derry/ Londonderry area is currently in the procurement stage.  This scheme will be 100% funded by NIHE.

No Fines Works, Tranche 1

Out of the 12 schemes in Tranche 1 to date, 10 schemes have been completed.  

The remaining 2 schemes were partially completed by the originally appointed Contractor but are now scheduled to be completed by Response Maintenance Contractors or NIHE’s Direct Labour Organisation.

The completed improvement schemes include:

  • Meadowbrook (Pilot), Craigavon
  • Cliftondene, Belfast
  • Ballysillan (Phase 2), Belfast
  • Newpark, Antrim
  • Fern Park, Derry
  • Ballysillan (Phase 1), Belfast
  • Carlisle, Belfast 
  • Meadowbrook, Craigavon
  • Brownstown, Portadown 
  • Redmanville, Portadown

The schemes currently scheduled to be completed cover improvements in the following areas:

  • Coleraine area
  • Bloomfield, Derry

No Fines works, Tranche 2

To date 4 schemes have been completed with 7 schemes currently on site. 

The completed improvement schemes include:

  • Finaghy, Belfast
  • Forthriver Ph 3
  • Brookmount/Derry Road, Omagh
  • Ennis Tarry, Lurgan

The schemes currently on site are in the following areas:

  • Forthriver (Phases 1, and 2), Belfast
  • Ballymurphy (Phases 1 and 2), Belfast
  • Clonduff, Belfast

The 2 schemes below were partially completed by the originally appointed Contractor but are now scheduled to be completed by the NIHE’s Direct Labour Organisation or through a new Procurement:

  • Ardowen, Craigavon
  • Drumcoo, Dungannon

No Fines works, Tranche 3

Three contracts have been awarded in August 2022 to complete works to approximately 450 properties with an estimated value of over £14million. 

Elements of this tranche will be funded by 100% investment from the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

The areas were this work will be undertaken are;

  • Holywood and Bangor
  • Greystone, Antrim
  • Lurgan
