New homes in rural areas

We own around 14,500 social rented homes in rural areas.

We also actively work to identify rural areas that need new social and affordable housing. We know this need is often hidden, as those interested in rural housing do not always register with us because they believe opportunities are limited.

To help address this hidden demand, we carry out housing needs tests in selected rural areas every year.

Through these tests we work with rural communities to promote our range of housing services and encourage those in need of a home to come forward and register on our waiting list.

These tests are discussed in our ‘Rural Matters’ magazines, which also give details of how you can register an interest for new social housing in your area.

In the last year we examined the need for new housing in the following areas.

If you belong to a rural community where there is a need for new homes

We are happy to visit and talk to rural communities with concerns about a lack of social or affordable housing in their area. We may decide that a rural housing need test is required. If we find there is a need for new social or affordable housing we can then examine the best way to address that need.

If you would like to discuss housing issues, please contact our Rural Housing Unit.

You can also use the search facility on the Social Housing Development Programme page to see where we are providing new homes.

We also provide advice and information about renting privately or buying a home in your area:
