Advice for Irish Travellers

Advice for the Irish Traveller community in Northern Ireland.

We are responsible for accommodation for the Irish Traveller community in Northern Ireland. This page gives advice for the Irish Traveller Community.

What is the Housing Executive responsible for?

District councils used to be responsible for Irish Traveller serviced sites. However, this changed in 2003, when the Housing Order (NI) transferred ownership and responsibility to us.

Our local district offices are now responsible for:

  • the management of serviced sites in their area

  • deciding who gets pitches on serviced sites

  • allocation of transit pitches in their area

We work with the Department for Communities and registered housing associations to provide suitable accommodation for Irish Travellers, and to improve living conditions wherever possible.
