Reopening old fireplaces

You should never reopen and use an old fireplace that has been closed in your home. While it may be tempting, it can be very dangerous. It causes a huge health and safety risk to you and your neighbours.

A fireplace that has been closed for a long time will not have been looked after or cleaned, making it unsafe to use. For example, it may be blocked or cracked.

Using it can:

  • cause yours and your neighbours’ homes to catch on fire.
  • leak carbon monoxide into your home
