Home Improvement Agencies

There are two home improvement agencies in Northern Ireland who offer additional assistance to process applications for adaptations in privately owned or privately rented property. Advice and assistance from these agencies is free and confidential. The agencies are Gable (Shelter, Northern Ireland)and Fold Housing Trust.

G.A.B.L.E. (A Shelter Northern Ireland project)

This charity operates a service to assist elderly and disabled people with home improvements or repairs through the GABLE Project. They operate in Strabane, Derry, Limavady and Magherafelt council areas and offer the following services:

• information on grants for home improvement
• support and help right through the grants process
• technical advice
• help with selecting contractors
• help to organise building work
• visits on site while work is progressing
• assistance with architectural services

Fold Housing Trust (Staying Put Department)

Fold Housing Trust is a non-profit making organisation dedicated to helping elderly and disabled people within the community. Fold offers practical assistance and support to repair, adapt or improve homes in all other areas of Northern Ireland that are not covered by Gable. Fold can act as an agent throughout the grant application relieving people of some of their responsibilities in completing the grant application. They offer the following services:

• advice on repair and improvement of property
• information on obtaining grants and loans
• advice on adaptations for disabled people
• practical help with the grants administrative process
• technical support e.g. selecting builders
• obtaining plans
• technical advice.
