Examples of adaptations

Housing adaptations for people with a disability are split into two categories - major and minor.

Minor adaptations which don't need a referral

We can:

  • provide a handrail can be added to the front or back entrance of the house
  • provide a whirly clothes line or path leading to a clothes line
  • widen paths around the property
  • define steps for people with visual impairments
  • re-site coal bunkers
  • add outdoor lighting

We can:

  • add an additional stair rail
  • change door knobs to lever handles
  • lower Yale locks
  • lowering electrical sockets to an accessible level
  • add power points
  • add rocker light switches
  • change lighting or add lighting
  • relocate clothes hanging rails
  • provide accessible window openings
  • add letter cages or delivery shelves in entrance hall.

We can:

  •  lower or replace high wall cupboards

  •  additional storage space in kitchen

  •  lowering the cooker mains switch

  •  install an extractor fan with accessible controls.

Minor adaptations which do need a referral

There are other minor adaptations which require referral to an occupational therapist to assess your needs.

Examples of this include:

  • installing a level access shower
  • installing of an over bath shower
  • installing of non-slip surface
  • providing storage space for wheelchair
  • fitting ramps
  • fitting special baths
  • installing special toilets
  • adding a step in shower
  • widening doors for wheelchair access
  • installing an intercom & door unlock systems
  • creating paved areas for wheelchairs

Major adaptations

We are also responsible for carrying out certain major adaptations to tenant's homes.

Examples of major adaptations include:

  • bathroom extensions (ground floor showers & W.C’s)
  • bedroom extensions
  • hardstandings
  • major internal changes
  • redesign or re-organisation of existing kitchen
  • stairlifts
  • vertical through floor lifts.
