Welfare Supplementary Payment

There is support for people in Northern Ireland affected by welfare changes to reduce the impact.

Welfare Supplementary Payment(s) claims

You don't need to claim a Welfare Supplementary Payment, also called ‘mitigation’.  If you have lost benefit as a result of welfare changes the Department for Communities will contact you directly with the details.

You may qualify for more than one Welfare Supplementary Payment depending on your circumstances.

Changes for which the payments are available

Welfare Supplementary Payments are available to support you if you lost out under the following welfare changes:

  • Social Sector Size Criteria / Bedroom Tax
  • Benefit Cap
  • Employment and Support Allowance
  • Personal Independence Payment
  • Loss of disability premiums/elements
  • Carers

Social Sector Size Criteria / Bedroom Tax

If you qualify for Welfare Supplementary Payment(s) you will see the payments appear in your quarterly housing costs (rent / rates) statement.  They are paid every 4-weeks in arrears.

More information is available on nidirect – the government’s website.
